Research findings — Microsoft Context IQ and APM

1. Microsoft Context IQ → Microsoft IQ (rebrand)

"Context IQ" was an Outlook/M365 feature (type "/" to insert files/people). It is being RETIRED as of March 2026. However, the "IQ" brand has been repurposed into something much bigger — announced at Ignite 2025:

Microsoft IQ is a three-layer intelligence architecture:

  • Work IQ — captures collaboration patterns, communication signals, meeting behavior from M365. Powers Copilot personalization.
  • Fabric IQ — the most relevant to CaseTalk. Adds a semantic intelligence layer to Microsoft Fabric (their unified data platform). Core concept: Ontology items that define business entities, relationships, and business rules on top of raw data.
  • Foundry IQ — enterprise knowledge retrieval across SharePoint, OneDrive, Azure, maintaining permissions.

2. Fabric IQ Ontology — directly overlaps with CaseTalk

Fabric IQ ontologies define:

  • Entities — business concepts (Orders, Assets, Sensors)
  • Relationships — connections between entities
  • Business Rules — constraints and triggered actions

This is essentially conceptual modeling applied to an enterprise data platform. CaseTalk already does this at a much deeper level with FCO-IM fact types, constraints, and derivation rules.

Key differences:

  • Fabric IQ auto-generates ontologies from Power BI semantic models
  • Fabric IQ binds ontologies to live data and AI agents
  • CaseTalk provides formal conceptual modeling with mathematical rigor (FCO-IM)
  • CaseTalk generates database schemas; Fabric IQ consumes existing ones

Opportunity: CaseTalk models could potentially be exported as Fabric IQ ontology definitions, positioning CaseTalk as the rigorous modeling front-end for Microsoft's intelligence platform.

3. APM — Application Portfolio Management

APM is an enterprise architecture discipline for managing an organization's application landscape:

  • Inventory all applications
  • Assess business value vs. technical fitness
  • Rationalize (Gartner TIME model: Tolerate, Invest, Migrate, Eliminate)
  • Plan transformation roadmaps

Main vendors: Ardoq, LeanIX, Bizzdesign, ServiceNow, Planview.

Microsoft does not have a dedicated APM product, but Azure has governance/management capabilities. APM tools typically need a data model underneath — another potential CaseTalk integration point.

Relevance to CaseTalk

  1. Fabric IQ export: CaseTalk's conceptual models (OFTypes, fact types, constraints) could be exported as Fabric IQ ontology definitions
  2. Competitive awareness: Microsoft is moving into the "business semantics" space that CaseTalk has occupied for decades
  3. APM integration: CaseTalk's data modeling could feed APM tools with application data models for rationalization assessments
  4. Marketing angle: "CaseTalk provides the formal conceptual foundation that Fabric IQ ontologies need"
